In the cool light of the morning the veils of fog lift.
In front of the bow, foamy spray drifts across the deck.
Like dewdrops, you break the first rays of sunshine
with diamond light.
A theater curtain of mist rises,
gives a clear view,
on the coastline of an island.
There now, powerful, decisive, with a dark foot
a mountain range.
In the delicate, light blue of the dawning day
the snow fields on the peaks shone.
A cool downwind blows as the first greeting as you enter the bay.
Palm trees raise their fronds in greeting
A bitter scent of fertile earth, sweet to the sailor’s nose, wafted across.
Surf shows a white band.
In your ears there is a peaceful silence full of Sunday peace
My heart, you have reached your goal.
The anchors fall from the jibs with a clatter
My camera and I had reached the destination. In the luggage, a small Sony NEX with a glued – on optical viewfinder (carpet tape) and
a Sony lens 16mm F 1:2.8, with circular polarizing filter 49mm DN. Of course with a circular polarizing filter, as there was always too much light. Expecting bright light and also dark shadows, glittering bodies of water and happy people.
Neither my camera nor I were disappointed.
For me, Crete is as diverse as its own small continent, which I have been able to visit three times so far. The stay in September was at the Hotel Herronissos Village. The experience of the diversity of light, colors, smells and sounds triggered the same thing for me as it did for Tania Blixsen when she wrote “I had a farm in Africa…” – I find it profoundly impactful.
