Godox has just launched the V100, a round-head flash featuring 100Ws output which, as far as we know, is an unprecedented level of power for an on-camera flash. (This is a news article, mainly based on Godox’s press release and other materials. The images were also provided by Godox. If or when we have an opportunity to test this new flash, we will write a full independent review.)
The Godox V100 is an on-camera flash, which means it’s designed to be mounted on a camera hotshoe (although it can also be used off-camera with a sync cable or more commonly, a wireless trigger). Generally speaking, off-camera flashes a.k.a. strobes – like the Godox AD100, which we reviewed last year – tend to be more powerful, whereas on-camera flashes sacrifice some power for portability. The V100, despite being an on-camera flash, has the same power output as the AD100 strobe.
On the surface, the Godox V100 looks similar to the popular Godox V1 or V1 Pro. Like the V1 series, the V100 is powered by a Li-ion battery, and has a round head compatible with a range of accessories (e.g. the AK-R1 kit, and the AK-R21 projector which we reviewed last year).
But the V1 has a maximum output of 76Ws, while the V100 goes up to 100 Ws. I haven’t yet seen guide number specs for the V100, but presumably more information will emerge in the coming weeks. And I already have a V1 Pro, so I will compare it with the V100 if I get a chance.
The Godox V100 also has a touchscreen interface, while the V1 has conventional buttons and LCD screen. I have used a touchscreen on other Godox products, namely the Lux Master and the X3 wireless trigger, and they were both very well-implemented in terms of both usability and aesthetics. So with the Godox V100, I am hoping for more of the same.
The Godox V100 also boasts TTL functionality, a detachable sub-flash (SU-1) like on the V1 Pro for fill light and other applications, a 2W LED modeling lamp, global shutter sync up to 1/80,000 seconds (!), high-speed continuous shooting, and an advanced cooling system which enables 70-100 consecutive flashes at full power.
In addition to being mounted on camera, the Godox V100 can also function as both a master and receiver unit. It shares the same battery as the V860III, V1, V1 Pro and AD100Pro, which is useful if you have a few of these flash units, because you can swap batteries around if needed. The battery can be charged in-device using a type-C charging port, or with the VC26T charger (sold separately).
If you own, or have considered, the Godox V1, but would like even more power, the Godox V100 may well be the right flash for you. In fact, if you are looking for maximum power with an on-camera flash – and this is something we can rarely say, in a crowded and competitive market where photographers are frankly spoilt for choice – I don’t think there is any other product currently out there which can compete with the Godox V100.
