NEWS: Negative Supply Introduces Second Generation Light Source Mini 97 CRI

By Molly Kate

Celebrating its third anniversary of producing light sources for film scanning, Negative Supply is launching the Light Source Mini 97 CRI, the first of their redesigned second-generation light sources created to be brighter than ever!

The light source is smaller and dedicated to 35mm and 120 film negatives. With a reduced surface area, the light can handle film sizes up to 6x9cm. Designed to fit into the Negative Supply eco-system, the new light source is compatible with all suitable adapters and accessories.

Much brighter than Negative Supply’s 99 CRI 4×5 Light Source Basic, the LUX rating for the Light Source Mini has been bumped up to 18,000 as compared to the 4,500 rating on the 4×5 Light Source Basic. This is comparable to the 5×7 Light Source Pro Negative Supply also makes. The 97 CRI light rating maintains a high colour accuracy so while it is a step down from the 99 CRI rating of the 4×5 Light Source Basic, this is hardly a compromise.

Negative Supply developed the Light Source Mini to be more compact and less expensive than the 4×5 Light Source Basic priced at $299. The new Light Source Mini in comparison will set you back slightly less at $249.

The company says they developed the Light Source Mini after reviewing sales data and feedback from users and realized more often than not, customers were using the light for 35mm and medium format film. 4X5 format use was less common and therefore the market called for something smaller, less expensive, but also more powerful.

As the Light Source Mini is compatible with all of Negative Supply’s existing adapters, this has allowed the company to offer new bundles for customers looking to acquire a full scanning setup (digital camera and macro lens not included). Two new kits will be available alongside the launch of the Light Source Mini: The Basic 35mm Scanning Kit with the Basic Riser Mini and the Premium Curated Kit.

The Basic Kit coming in at $449 includes the Basic Film Carrier 35, the Light Source Mini, the Basic Riser Mini, and the Basic Film Carrier 35 Stabilizing Mask. This setup will work well for users who are only interested in scanning 35mm film.

For users interested in both 35mm and 120 format scanning tools, Negative Supply is also now offering the Premium Curated Kit. This includes the Pro Mount MK2 (with an anti-static brush) and 35/120 adapter plates, the Light Source Mini, the Pro Film Carrier 35, the Film Carrier 120, the Pro Riser MK3, the Film Carrier 120 Full Border Scanning Guide, the Pro Carrier 35 Full Border Scanning Cassette, and the Pro Film Carrier Hood Combo. All yours for a more high-end price of $2199.

Since opening in 2019 with a Kickstarter debut, Negative Supply has built an eco-system around film scanning. Their tools allow users to scan 110, 35mm, medium, and large format film. I built a negative/slide scanner from used Nikon parts plus a Sony A7ii previewing the images on a 24 inch wall mount monitor. I got so good at it that I could scan one cardboard mount 35mm slide per second.
