Negative Supply has something new for home DSLR scanners, the Basic Film Carrier 35 MK2. This upgraded film carrier brings several elements from its pro-level system into the company’s more affordable line-up. Using the same cassette design and mask set as the Pro Film Carrier 35, the Basic MK2 promises flatter and smoother scanning with less “drift” than the original version.
The Basic Film Carrier 35 MK2 comes with the standard 35mm scanning cassette, the film holder itself, and 3 masks for 35mm, half-frame, and panoramic formats. The cassette has an improved double-S curve channel design which keeps film flatter, an essential element for great scans. It also comes with an adapter to use the 35mm Film Scanning Hood which eliminates extraneous light around the setup (scanning hood sold separately).
Negative Supply, a company with less than 20 employees, offers home DSLR scanning equipment where each element can be ordered individually or as part of a system. The Basic Film Carrier 35 MK2 is compatible with Negative Supply’s 4×5 Light Source Basic or the Light Source Mini. You can also add on the 35mm Full Border Scanning Cassette to scan borders or sprockets. Further additions available will include cassettes for APS, 110, and 126 formats, but these are sold separately.
While the film is still pushed through by hand in the Basic Film Carrier 35 MK2, talking to the company, they say there is something in the works for Basic users that will close the gap to the Pro line. Aside from this exciting teaser, the small company is also continually working to bring down the product cost by investing in tools and machines that allow them to manufacture more parts internally. Negative Supply says they have developed a few in-house processes already that has allowed them to bring the cost down on this product in particular.
“When we can use alternative manufacturing processes and/or bring those processes internally we can save money which is passed along to the end user. This is another reason we try and use as many shared parts as we can, such as the two 35mm film carriers utilizing the same cassette.” – Negative Supply
DSLR scanning is a quick process and Negative Supply say you can scan a roll of film using their equipment in under 2 minutes. Compared to other scanners like flatbeds or ones like the Plustek Opticfilm series where it could potentially take 2 minutes to scan one image (depending on the resolution), this is a big time-saving.
“We’re always excited when we can design a product that works better and bring costs down. Most people in the shop can chip in on the R&D process and it is a joint effort from everyone when we get these new products done. We’re very proud of what our small team can accomplish” – Negative Supply.
The retail price for the Basic Film Carrier 35 MK2 is $79. For more information, head over to Negative Supply’s new product page here. You can also follow the team over on Instagram here for social updates!
