On November 25th, December 2nd, and 9th, Intrepid Studios will be hosting open days for anyone interested in checking out their studio space and darkroom, trying out their cameras, or having a chat with the team and fellow enthusiasts. Opening times will be 10 am to 4 pm at Intrepid Studios, 11 Chapel Mews in Hove (BN3 1AR).
Free workshop tasters will run for both colour and black & white darkroom printing. To sign up, send an email to Intrepid via their contact page here (or at [email protected]) to make sure you get a spot.
Intrepid Camera is known for its large format and darkroom products but they also opened a studio space that is available for the community to use 7 days a week for up to 8 hours per day. Memberships are available for 3 months, 6 months, or on a residency basis but the space can also be hired out on a one-off basis. Along with the rentable darkroom and photo studio, they have a film scanning station!
The darkroom has four individual booths that are self-contained and stocked with all the equipment needed for printing except for paper and negatives. This includes a De Vere 504 Enlarger that can do both colour and black & white from 35mm, 120, or even 4×5 negatives. For first-timers, the Intrepid Studios team will walk you through everything needed to get started with the set-up but they also run group workshops for folks new to printing.
At the film scanning station, you can use either an Epson Perfection V850 scanner for 35mm up to 8×10 or a Plustek OpticFilm 8200i SE scanner for 35mm that both hook into a 27″ iMac with Epson Scan loaded with Silverfast Ai software. There’s a lightbox for checking negatives that is available for darkroom users as well.
If you are looking for an affordable photo studio to rent, Intrepid Studios is set up for full-day or half-day rentals. You’d find most things a studio could need including Godox continuous lighting and strobes, stands, modifiers, tripods, backdrops, polyboards, and either wireless or cable sync. You could also rent a large format Intrepid Camera to use in the studio.
The space sounds like a dream for any photography creative to take advantage of, especially if you are local to Hove. Find more information on Intrepid’s website here and don’t miss an open day!
