What is Jankuary?
Like an enema for the creative soul, I like to take a little break when November rolls around and from shooting, and from posting on social media. During my absence I asked myself what I should do when I came back and I’ve had this idea rolling around in my brain for some time: Jankuary.
Combining the words “janky” and January, I proposed to the powers that be a month-long theme of weird cameras, strange hybrids of old tec and new, and general strangeness in photography. I’ve been collecting strange oddities for just such an occasion and for the month of January I’ll be showcasing a few of those choices on my weekly release, starting Monday, January 5th 2024. You may however see examples before then, as I have made a call to action to some of the other writers here and I’m excited to see what everyone comes up with.
In fact, anyone can participate. Dig up that old no name plastic piece of crap, strap on a 100-year-old lens to a modern digital wonder, or develop your film in your own recipe of instant coffee and the tears of your enemy. Anything goes. It should be creative and frustrating and not so much DIY, but DIWHY.
Because of previous commitments I am limited to a single film, but I have other tricks up my sleeve, and I hope you’ll stay tuned for the fun.
I have a YouTube Channel, Weekly Newsletter and Discord I hope you’ll check out!
Stay Classic!
A logistical note from Hamish: If anyone wishes to take part in Azriel’s Jankuary, and can get their photos and story uploaded within the month of January I will bump it up the publication queue, or drop it into an afternoon publication slot. Just email me and let me know when you have uploaded. If you aren’t already a contributor, then just drop me an email with words of your story and sign up as a contributor. And by the way, the photo at the top of this post is of my chosen cameras… and yes, that is a 110 Halina with a Pentax that meows like a cat when you turn it on… what of it… it’s Jankuary we are talking about here!

Maybe I'll bulk-roll some HP5 rolls of 18 exposures to save myself from potential jank-exhaustion! I dev/scan at home anyway. Thanks for the great idea, Azriel!
