Aho hoy fellow film fans! It’s been a fun old time here at Sunny 16 Towers, with both Shrove Tuesday and Valentine’s Day in the last week this post is officially fuelled by pancakes and Prosecco, so apologies in advance if we start to feel a bit Uncle Dick as we go on.
We had a great time last week answering questions submitted by listeners via Instagram on a wide range of (mostly) photography based subjects. Amongst the many things we covered was the fact that Hamish’s appearance on the show has definitely stirred up some Leica lust in the crew, that Rachel was almost certainly a rootin’ tootin’ cowgirl in a past life, and that Ade’s idea of an ideal spot for a bit of photography might be the D-Day landings.
This week it was a real delight to have Killian Idsinga return to the show to talk to us about the newly announced theme for his next edition of Let’s Explore Magazine, which if you haven’t already heard, is Perseverance. It was really interesting to hear the thought process which led Killian to this choice, and what it means to him personally, but as always the real joy will come in seeing the stories that get submitted and chosen for Let’s Explore Issue 2 when it comes out later this year.
So, what other exciting news from Sunny 16? Well, we’ve only gone and kicked off the next round of the Cheap Shots Challenge! If you haven’t listened to any of the previous Cheap shots related episodes before, here’s what you need to know: About a year and half ago we came up with the idea that in order to dispel the notion of “You need expensive kit to get good pictures” we would challenge ourselves and our listeners to go out and buy a truly cheap camera, and then use said camera to shoot a different genre of photography with every new round of the challenge, no matter how ill suited that camera may be to the task.
So far we’ve tried our hands at Street Photography, Portraiture, Macro and even animals and WIldlife. The random topic we drew from the lucky Holga box this time round was… Sport! Now, as sport is something of an anathema to about three thirds of the Sunbeams, and as it’s mid Winter here in the UK we made the executive decision to broaden it to Sports and activities, which is nice and broad!
We’re going to be running this round of the challenge until the end of March, at which time we’ll get an awesome guest judge to come on and look at all the entries submitted, and also to decide which of the hosts wins this round, something which always causes much angst in certain quarters!
Want to join in? Of course you do! If this is your first time taking part, then your first job is to hunt down your cheap shots weapon. We allow a budget of approx £20 for camera and initial roll of film, and ideally this is something you’ll be buying particularly for this, but if you happened to grab a real bargain last year and you want to use that…we’ll allow it, so long as it’s in budget! If you’ve already got your camera sorted from previous rounds then you’re good to go. Once you’ve got your camera and taken your pictures we’d love to see them shared on Instagram, twitter, Flickr – wherever you like to share you images, just be sure to tag them #cheapshotschallenge so we can easily find them. To get your pictures entered to be talked about on the show at the end of the month by our awesome judge, then please email your TWO favourite shots to [email protected], and put Cheap shots Challenge in the subject line
We’re already seeing a lot of posts about the cameras people are picking up, and the first entry has already appeared on Instagram, so we’re really looking forwards to seeing what everyone comes up with this month and we hope to see you there.
Before we head out the door we just want to give say a huge congratulations to past guest Steve Lloyd of the Chroma 4×5 Acrylic cameras, who launched his Kickstarter campaign last Friday, and was fully funded within 24 hours! Really great news, and if you haven’t checked out Steve’s Kickstarter yet there’s still plenty of time to get on there and put your name down for an awesome way to get started in large format photography. Well done Steve!
That’s it from us for now, until next time keep shooting film and being nice – #shootfilmbenice
