Contax RTS II and a roll of Expired Provia

By Ibraar Hussain

Damn I love this camera! Sometimes I caress and stroke it, touch every surface and the lovingly pack it away again. Then I get love sick and take it out again! A shame I don’t use it as often as I should like, but that’s the trouble with me rather than my favourite pastime.

I’m lazy, I procrastinate and stay indoors, this is severe during winter – sometimes I wish I could hibernate and sleep from November to March when I suddenly feel alive again.

Anyway this is a short post about my darling Contax RTS II. A shame I can’t afford to buy any of the matching Carl Zeiss lenses, but I do have a small stash of cheap crap which I am quite fond of.

M42 lenses are not in any way cutting edge – but they’re cheap, well built, user serviceable and with bags of character. And you can use them on any camera! Mine are used on my two Minolta Dynax 7 and Konica Minolta Dynax 7D.

The main weapon is the formidable Yashica ML 50mm f2 – the closest I could get to the snub nosed Cal Zeiss 45mm Tessar f2.8. The Yashica isn’t a Tessar design as it has more elements, but it’s small and doesn’t protrude – it’s smaller than it’s faster 50mm Yashica ML brothers and has a very pleasing swirly almost DDR/Soviet type out of focus areas when opened up.

This is augmented by my collection of cheap and cheerful M42 lenses. Firstly is the Walter PKK – the Indutstar 50mm f3.5 Tessar. I have never used it yet as I haven’t had the chance, it’s tiny and fiddly – but one day God willing I shall use it to produce a masterpiece (in my dreams).

Next up we have a couple of beauties – The Pentacon 135mm f2.8 with a zillion bladed diaphragm. I really like this a lot – solid build quality and user serviceable – great for sniping targets over long distance – better for portraits with a lovely dreamy look.

Then we have my personal favourite – the Helios 44-2 58mm f2. What a fantastic lens! Great for people and with a flare and look which was made in Valhalla. Finally I have my snapshot wider lens – which is an Auto Chinon 35mm f2.8

If I were to buy another lens it would be the Jupiter 85mm f2. That would be as like rolling the collection in glitter as it’s not a cheap M42 lens.

Anyway I’ve shot a few rolls here and there – always love the feel of the camera and the HUGE bright Pro level Viewfinder which I have heard say is biggest and brightest of any 35mm SLR.

I had a roll of Fujichrome Provia 100 which had been expired for years and was lingering in my freezer. (I had bought it expired  before I put it in the freezer several years ago so I was expected it to be crap).

Well, in for a penny and in for a pound as they say and I went out to shoot it!

I used to live in Wivenhoe – if you look on a map you’ll see it hidden away south-east of Colchester on the Colne Estuary. A pretty quiet place full of bohemian University types, very different from the rest of Essex and you won’t find many Essex accents there. (I’m a cockney boy from Clapton in East London so sneer at such mockeries). It is great for photography and full of interesting subjects. So on one of my cycle rides (on a 1983 Raleigh Clubman) I took my camera bag, then went to town with shooting – trying out the various lenses. I shot about half a roll and then went home.

Later that week – on the hottest day of 2022 (it was 100’F) I popped down to my home town – London, which I love and am homesick for, but which I loathe as soon as I get there. I can’t live without it and can’t live with it. One day I think after I die my soul will try and haunt London but’ll get vexed and drift off somewhere else. I was around the West End and South Bank with my missus and her relatives who wanted to marvel at this once great city. My Contax RTS II 35mm Full metal jacket was poised in my hand as I shot! I enjoyed holding it, and sneering at these Digital mirrorless users I came across. We stayed and for the very last time we went for a stroll in the woods of Epping Forest around Loughton where I haven’t been to since and probably never will again.

Anyway, I used all of these lenses and enjoyed every shot.

Every single shot was a keeper – and the over dated expired Provia showed some interesting character.

The primary colours especially red, blue and green popped nicely. Everything was quite grainy and some had shifted to be quite warm others blue. Of course most of my photos (from London) were family shots (so not included) but I’ve a few here which show off some of the characteristics of the expired film, the lenses and of course the places which I photographed. In London especially, the heat combined with the expired film and expired lenses produced slides with a look that could have been shot in 1972!

Anyway I hope you like the Photos – they won’t win any prizes but I think they show off the outdated lenses and expired film with some character.

Dear Ron, your statement either is an attempt at humor that I, being German and therefore a stranger to the concept, do not get, or it is not a very useful comment. What picture is out of focus in your perception? Where should the focus be? How would it improve the picture? And, above all, maybe the focus is where the author wants it to be? What I like about 35mmc is, among many other things, the encouragement and kindness that you get in the comments. it is essential to keep a community going that is authored by enthusiasts and amateurs. I'd appreciate if it would be kept this way. You don't have to like what you see. If you don't, you can offer a well founded comment that is polite, useful and actionable. If you feel you can't do that and wish to avoid unintended rudeness it is best to stick to Dumbledore's advice and not risk accidental rudeness by not saying anything.

Thank you Stefan. Such comments are tiring - I approved it and allowed it to be posted just to demonstrate and see if Ron has anything to say Maybe Ron doesn’t quite get it. Me thinks he should stick to DPreview forum and pixel peep sharp 80 mega pixel digital images shot on the super duper high res cameras they use

Love that telephoto portrait with the old quarry gear, and really good to see Arlesford Creek through someone else’s eyes. I’m often there myself with my old Nikon cameras and whatever colour film I happen to have in them. And I treat them just as you do your Contax. The pleasure of just owning an F and an F2 is enough in itself to keep my photographic enthusiasm fresh. I’ll be back there in the spring/summer evenings, perhaps the winter hibernation thing is north east Essex side effect. Certainly feels like it here in Colchester.

Thanks man! It’s one of my favorite photo places which I’ve covered in my Durst Automatica and Konica Minolta Maxxum 7D articles My missus still works there in Wivenhoe so always get a chance to explore some more Are you still around there ? Give me a shout if ever you fancy meeting up for a photo walk And I really enjoy cranky old gear - if I wanted sharpness (as smart ass Ron mentioned below) I’d shoot modern or expensive camera / lens

A camera I lusted after many years ago but never got, and probably never will (rangefinders and occasionally a Pentax LX nowadays). Some very nice shots Ibraar, I especially like the last shot (in sunset?), the female portrait early on and the barbed wire fence and background gear. Most people would have focused on the gear, your shot is far more imaginative.

Really great camera! I used one, years ago, loaned from a friend. I do not remember the lens, but it all performed flawlessly, as far as I recall. I do love the nature as you show it, and I especially like the Colne estuary photograph. Those reeds and the water, those did it for me.

Thank you!

Hi Ibraar, you have proved that you don't need expensive glass. Lovely images. I'm a keen Contax guy with the RTSii right at the top of the tree. Form and function perfectly balanced. I love all the Zeiss glass I have but equally find pleasure and fine results from using Yashica ML lens and random collection of M42 lenses from Takumar, Zeiss, Yashica and of course the wonderful 44/2 Helios.

Witty entertaining article Ibraar, punctuated with great images. Always reassuring to find other people also get this attached to their cameras. I was very heartened by the results on the expired Fujichrome, as I am just using up a roll at present in a Vito B and I have another in the fridge. These expired in. 2006 and probably haven't been in a fridge at all... friend says their house is cold much of the time. I am just hoping it might produce something with a stop over. If it can do anything like your images that would be great. I particularly liked the shot of the cable pulleys and the long horned cow... framing just works so well on that one. Thanks

Thank you Paul. Snapping with defective film and old lenses is always fun. Can get creative - not everyone's cup of tea but I enjoy it. I hope you enjoy the photography and the results of the Vito B - I'd be very much interested to see!

Thanks for this review of your Contax !
My favourites are the Colne-and Epping-forest- pics.
I have the Contax RTS Mk.I and i do it the same way like you. My M42 Pentacon- and Carl-Zeiss-Jena lenses fit perfectly on these wonderful camera.
My best Pentacons are an early single coated Pentacon 29mmf2.8, which takes wonderful shots, and a late Pentacon MC 135mmf2.8, it is usuable with nice results even at f2.8.
My most suitable Zeiss Jena lenses for the Contax RTS are Flektogon 20mmf2.8, Flektogon 35mmf2.8, Pancolar 50mmf1.8 ( i use two different versions ), Pancolar 80mmf1.8 and Sonnar 135mmf4.
Futhermore i employ a telephoto specialist for birding or other tripod actions (built-in tripod clamp) , the Meyer Görlitz Primotar 180mm f3.5.
My recommendations for a Contax RTS:
Pros :
- very sturdy and rugged SLR
- unique design
- very precise light meter
- perfect position of dials and buttons
Cons :
- don't buy it, when you need a lightweight camera
- the viewfinder is well made, but not very bright ( camera out 1974 ! ).
