NEWS: TTArtisan Releases APS-C 35mm F1.8 Autofocus Lens for Fujifilm X, Sony E, and Nikon Z Mount

By Molly Kate

TTArtisan has released a new autofocus 35mm F1.8 APS-C Fujifilm X-Mount lens. This lens is also coming to Sony E and Nikon Z mount users but at a later date. For now, X-Mount owners can take advantage of this versatile and low-cost lens that promises good low-light performance and fast autofocus.

TTArtisan’s 35mm F1.8 autofocus lens rings up at $149 (USD), making it less than half the cost of the closest comparable X-Mount lens, the Fujifilm 35mm F2 WR lens priced at $399 (B&H new). It’s slightly faster at F1.8 but TTArtisan’s version is not weather-sealed, unlike Fujifilm’s F2 lens. It can also be compared to Fujifilm’s 35mm F1.4 version, priced at $600 (USD at B&H new).

The lens barrel and mount are constructed with aviation-grade aluminum and weigh approx. 199 grams. It comes with a square lens hood, which is a fashionable choice.

“Crafted with portability in mind, the TTartisan 35mm F1.8 lens boasts a compact and lightweight design that effortlessly complements your camera setup. Whether you’re documenting your daily adventures or embarking on a cross-country journey, this lens won’t weigh you down, ensuring you’re ready to seize the perfect shot at a moment’s notice.” – TTArtisan

The lens uses a stepper motor meaning the autofocus will be quick but also quiet. Eye detection autofocus can be engaged, making this especially helpful for portraits or family shooting.

“With its rapid and precise autofocus capabilities, The TTArtisan 35mm F1.8 ensures that every shot is captured in exquisite detail, eliminating the frustration of missed moments and blurred images.” – TTArtisan

The lens firmware can be updated through the rear lens cap. This is a change from previous lenses we have seen where the USB-C port is on the body of the lens itself.

Even though this is an APS-C lens, it can be used on full-frame sensors but there will be a slight vignette. TTArtisans advises you to set your full-frame camera in APS-C mode to avoid this. The equivalent focal length of this lens on a full-frame sensor is 50mm. As for chromatic aberration, purple fringing is reduced with the use of ultra-low dispersion glass elements.

Actually, this lens is clearly most comparable to the XC35 f/2 (optically similar to the XF version, but no aperture ring, plastic body and no WR). At $199, not only is the Fuji fairly comparably priced but they are similar in plastic body and no aperture ring. It'll be interesting to see if many Fuji shooters would opt for TTArtisan.

The XC lenses are great but they are softer than the TTArtisans from my experience using both in the Fujifilm X system. I love the XC lenses for video especially, not only for the softer quality but for the lightness. The TTArtisan lens is not plastic though, it's made from aviation aluminum. As a Fujifilm X shooter, I would opt for the TTArtisan myself unless its for video and I want a lighter XC lens.

This is exciting, and I don't even have any of the cameras or systems that this lens will work. One of the shocking things, at least for me, when first getting into photography, was how expensive lenses are. I have stumbled for years, mostly using kit lenses (and I don't knock kit lenses, they can be awesome for scope and price and learning and if that's all you have--all me), so I am very excited when there are some affordable lens options out there. I also really appreciate you all sharing this sort of news, because it's nice to just come to one source, 35mmc, instead of 19,000 sources and trying to read them all and make sense of it. Thank you all for the amazing thing you do, and this is only one beautiful part of it.

Thanks Kary! We try to cover as much as we can so nice to hear you find it helpful :) It's great to have the more affordable options for sure. I've used a variety of both third party, kit, and the higher end glass and honestly, the higher end glass isn't that much better than some of the results I've had with lenses from folks like TTArtisans. Even better that they are moving more into the autofocus capabilities!
