Film photography podcast, Grainsplaining, is back from a short hiatus this month with an International Women’s Day charity print sale running through Instagram. Centred around film and feminism, the podcast led by Emma Lloyd and Alex Heron is presented on the Sunny16 feed. It’s fun and fresh and speaks out about the inequalities women face in the photography industry.
This month, Grainsplaining is hosting a charity print sale that will take place from March 29th through April 1st. Inspired by Jim Mortram’s (Small Town Inertia) Photo Print Day, the print sale is raising money for charities that support and empower women.
“We are proud to see the positive changes taking place in the film community but know there is a long road ahead.” – Grainsplaining
Throughout March, photographers have been encouraged to post photos they would like to sell as prints on Instagram, tagging each one with #IWDFrameTheGrain. Submissions for the print sale will close on March 28th. There is no theme but the Grainsplaining team suggests something that you think would work well as physical media in someone’s space.
If you would like to purchase a print from the sale, browse the #IWDFrameTheGrain hashtag and reach out to the photographer via DM on the weekend of March 29th to April 1st. Select a charity that supports women, make a donation, and send a screenshot of the donation to the print seller. Additionally, send the same screenshot to the Grainsplaining team via DM or email at [email protected]. The suggested minimum donation is $10 or 10 GBP.
Shipping of the print will be organised between the photographer and the buyer. Prints can be made in the darkroom or via a print company.
“We hope this print sale can raise awareness of the obstacles women face in this industry whilst also showcasing the photographic talent that thrives in film! This is a great chance for the photographic community to come together to support some great causes” – Grainsplaining
Emma and Alex have suggested a few charities if you aren’t sure which one to pick. Amongst these are Hundred Heroines, Girls Out Loud, Smart Works, The Fawcette Society, Helen Bamber Foundation, Suzy Lamplugh Trust, MSI Reproductive Choices, Women’s Aid, Imkaan, Women in Sport, Bloody Good Period, and more! If you would like any more suggestions, send the Grainsplaining team a DM.
