Join me and the photography community on Bluesky

By Hamish Gill

Just a note to say that I, like many people, have finally completely ditched Twitter in favour of Bluesky. I joined Bluesky sometime ago now, but whilst it was in its testing phase it was a little quiet. Now it’s open for anyone to join any time, it seems to be picking up. In fact, in the last month or so it really seems to have come alive with photography folk, and whilst I mostly just use it to post the daily posts, it definitely has that welcoming and friendly feel that Twitter used to have.

In short, if your feeling lost now twitter is horrible, join Bluesky and find me here: hamishgill.bsky.social

Good to know Hamish. I'll check it out.

Many of my friends are migrating there—but I only ever tweeted once, so the loss of Twitter to me was no loss at all. My primary social is still Facebook, where I've curated a small, close group of old and new friends for personal, political and social issues, as well as joined numerous camera groups. As much as I despise all billionaire tech bros at this point, I still find Facebook very useful.

in any event, See you on Bluesky soon!

The absolute best feature of Facebook is that it reminds you on the anniversary of past posts you made. I really only post notable life events (e.g son’s high school graduation) or travel (with photos of course!) I’ve undertaken. That way I get FB reminders to reminisce over. Absolute best feature of Facebook.

1. Your Bluesky block list is publicly readable.

2. Bluesky has come under scrutiny from the European Commission for failing to meet transparency requirements under the Digital Services Act.

3. Bluesky is corporate-owned and for-profit. They are already talking about a subscription based model. (How long before the Elongated Muskrat buys it?)

Please consider adding Mastodon to your broadcast network.

Seconded for Mastodon. Consider Pixelfed if you want a more Instagram like experience. photog.social would be my first suggestion for anyone wanting to go to Mastodon, a great film photo community there already, and more on the wider network. Also on Bluesky, remember it is funded and owned by crypto folk and the ex-head of Twitter. It is another data gathering company. It will go the same way as Twitter, all it has right now is the benefit of it being the early stages before they start tightening the screws.

Twitter = X = Yuck. Hopefully Bluesky will filter out the dregs. I'll check it out.

I use Twitter at times (being the only social media app I use - very seldom and only then really to browse news and sport rather than anything else) and quite enjoy it
I really enjoyed it when Trump won, priceless responses from usual suspects on the liberal side in the US.

I for one don’t vote and can’t stand any of them, being a long time Anarchist.

I doubt I’ll be using any other echo chamber (as Twitter has become)

Even in these early days, it's notable how many nature and "higher" (astronomical) images are on Bluesky. Some exceedingly fine work is on display!
