Viltrox has a new compact full-frame wide-angle prime lens for Sony E users, an autofocus 20mm F2.8 option with an STM motor for quiet shooting. The lens is also coming to Nikon Z mount users within the next couple of months, but for now, Sony users can pick this affordable lens up for USD 158.
Made from lighter materials than Viltrox’s other lenses, the AF 20mm F2.8 weighs only 157g. The optical design features 10 elements in 8 groups including 2 ED and 2 aspherical lenses. There’s also one high refractive index element in there. The lens is not weather-sealed but it does have a HD Nano multilayer that is water-resistant and antifouling.
With a minimum focusing distance of 0.19m and a field of view of 91.6 degrees, this lens can get close to subjects and capture a large amount of the scene in the frame. Having a quiet autofocus is great for many situations including street photography. Also, being able to use eye autofocus with this lens is perfect for portraits. Viltrox also markets this lens to vloggers due to its wide angle and low weight.
“The strength of this lens will be the compact size, as it currently is (I believe) the smallest and lightest full-frame 20mm lens on any of these mounts.” – Dustin Abbott’s Review
There’s no aperture ring on the lens so this will be controlled from within the camera settings. However, the lens does have a manual focus ring for those who prefer this over autofocus in certain situations. A USB-C port is included on the lens itself for any firmware updates Viltrox may provide in the future.
Cinematographer and photographer, Phillip Skraba reviewed the Viltrox AF 20mm F2.8 on his YouTube channel here if you would like to see it in action.
