20 Frames on the Space Coast with Lomochrome Turquoise

By Ben G

In the Spring of 2023, I traveled for work to Coco Beach, Florida, which is situated on some barrier islands. It’s not really a fun trip (though I do love my co-workers) since it’s an early-morning, all-day, wait-and-see-what-gets-delayed kind of trip. Typically I arrive late Sunday night, then attend a 2-3 day meeting at Patrick Space Force Base and get back home asap. I’ve taken film cameras with me on these work trips in the past and gotten some interesting shots but usually my schedule doesn’t have much free time.

This time around I arrived a day early and went to the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex near Cape Canaveral, northwest of all the working launchpads. Port Canaveral is a working port just south of the launchpad complex and is a popular embarkation spot for cruise ships going to the Caribbean. As you continue south on the only north-south road, you’ll quickly find yourself in Coco Beach, known for being the home of the East Coast Surfing Hall of Fame and the Ron Jon Surf Shop. Oddly enough, Coco Beach is also home to The Wizard of Oz Museum which displays a collection of over 2000 originals props and artifacts from the movie. I’ve never been in there, myself, but I’ll make time on one of these trips.

Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex is an interesting place. The drive from Coco Beach takes one over the Banana River and through a swampy lagoon-ward part of the island, past a series of commercial lanchpads. The familiar space shuttle boosters and orange tank are visible a ways before you arrive at the parking lot. There are two buildings that house the majority of the indoor exhibits. The larger one sits underneath the signature shuttle boosters and fuel tank and is built around an actual space shuttle suspended between the 1st and 2nd floors. It is quite spectacular! Unfortunately it was too dark for my camera inside. The exhibits are crammed into every available space around the shuttle and are a bit chaotic, but very cool. And most everything, of course, is kid-friendly.

I brought a Minolta AF-C and loaded it with Lomochrome Turquoise. This AF-C has been around the world with me and is always dependable. It’s got the classic 80s clamshell design for protection, a sharp 35mm f2.8 lens and it’s auto-everything (except for the manual advance/rewind function, which I prefer). It is a contemporary of the Olympus XA series and shares the separate flash unit design, though I don’t use it much. I might do a review of this fine camera as I don’t see one on 35mmc, but at the same time I don’t want to put it on anyone’s radar. Maybe I’ll buy a few more and THEN review it.

Anyway, to the pictures. The Lomo Turquoise turned out to be a great choice as these color-swapped emulsions love sunlight and just tend to go black in the shadows. Midday sun makes for some pretty stark shadows so you’ll see that here. Regardless, I really enjoyed how these came out. I hope you will too.

On my film wish list for 2025. Need some better weather here in Yorkshire though.

These look great, thanks for the read and sharing.

All the best too.

Hi Ben, your choice of film emulsion matches perfectly with the space age subject matter. The orange brown sky almost reminds me of Bladerunner 2050. :-)

Thanks Zheng, I agree! Although it may be too sunny for a Bladerunner world. X-D

The film is on my 2025 to-try list, possibly at a workshop in Miami. I love Kennedy/Coco shots, and I especially liked several of these you posted—the first Coco Beach image and pavement arrow shot in particular—as they brought back memories from childhood visits. Thanks!

Ben,
These are super dramatic! Great compositions! The giant forms against a red/brown sky are otherworldly. And the blue flesh tones... crazy.
Thanks for posting these shots!

Great story and the space centre shots really suit the colours and contrast. Out of interest I get almost the same colours from my old CCD digital Olympus C200Z with a IR filter.

Oh, interesting! Are you using any particular filter combination? I assume you're somewhere in the low IR range.

Hi Ben, looks like there are a few reviews of the Minolta AF-C out there:

https://casualphotophile.com/2021/08/13/minolta-afc-review/

However, combined with your impressive pictures you might start a hype for this little gem after all. I was planning to add some clever word play here based on the fact that you are a scientist taking photos of rockets with a camera the price of which is skyrocketing but that joke eludes me like rocket science.

Looking forward to more posts from you next year¡

LOL! That right there is pretty good, Stefan! I really hope the price isn't rising too fast. I reeeally want a silver one. Cheers!

I have a roll of this film rolling around somewhere. Definitely a good match to the retro rocket imagery! Also curious how it turns people into Smurfs. Cool post for the end of 2024.

Thanks Russell! I'm also fascinated by the blue skin. I find it off-putting, but I think that makes me want to shoot more portraiture with it to figure out why I have the reaction I do (and I know I'm not alone).

It really works with the rockets Ben. I particularly liked the shot looking down the road with the arrow marking towards the SRB... I thought to colours worked perfectly there. I have a roll of the Lomo Lobster I have just taken out of a Minolta 110 and another one in the fridge. Not sure what to expect, but your images are encouraging. Currently it only seems to be these more crazy colour films that are available for 110, anything more natural or black and white is simply sold out where I am.

Thanks Paul! The stock on the Lomo site seems to go in big waves. There's always 110 available but they only have the color films in about twice a year imo. Best to buy in bulk! The redscale is fun, too! I think it favors slight overexposure. In some instances, I like to pull back on the red in post to see more of other strong colors that may be present.

Great story and photos, Ben! I also visited the Space Center last winter -- a gorgeous sunny day, but the photos I took (on Portra 160 I think) were incredibly boring. Something about the midday sun and lack of shadows I suspect. Your film choice and compositions make the photos pop. The colors remind me of "the Jetsons", and do bring nostalgia for those earlier "gee-whiz" days of Apollo etc. Well done!
